A Double Birthday Party at Flying Squirrel

By Carmen Kaethler, Macaroni Kid Winnipeg April 28, 2019

Planning birthday parties for my kids has been one of my favourite thing to do as a mom, some may even say that I tend to go overboard but combining event planning and celebrating my kids feels like it can never be too much. Last year we decided to combine my oldest’s birthday party with her best friend as they are only two weeks apart, we rented a pool and had a mermaid/shark themed party. The kids loved it so much that they wanted to do it again this year. Planning a party that your 6 year olds find cool, can accommodate older and younger siblings AND is gender neutral felt like a big order.

Superheroes to the Rescue

Then we decided on a superhero theme and what do super heroes do? Well leap over tall buildings and climb walls right?! So what would be better than a trampoline park to host the party?

We decided on Flying Squirrel and were not disappointed.

As we invited 30+ friends and family between the two kids we were able to combine birthday packages to accommodate our large group. They actually were able to set up the full back wall of the party area (two party table sections combined) to fit our kids and with the added décor package to the booking they had the table clothes, plates and helium balloons set up for us when we got there.

Attention to Details

I had mentioned on the confirmation email with the guest list, that it was a Teen Titan Go! (Superhero) party, thinking that they would maybe have some primary colours to throughout on the tables for us. When I got there have the table was the primary green/red/yellow but the other half was blue/purple/pink. I wasn’t sure exactly why but since my kids loved all the colours I was thrilled. Then one of the staff came up to me and asked if everything was okay for the colours, because she had gone online to compare the colours of ALL of the 5 many characters and wanted to get it right! [Okay if you know me you should know that this was the PERFECT thing to say to me…she had cared that much to look?! I was so impressed and thankful.]

Hassle Free Party

While we had a lot of kids invited that we had to corral throughout the party, the actual setup and running of the party was the easiest I’ve ever had. As I mentioned they looked after the decoration and setup of the tables so all we had to do was bring the treat bags (I decorated them from an Etsy purchased download printable of Teen Titan Go! characters and filled with super hero capes and masks purchased in bulk from amazon, bubbles and Mentos wrapped as dynamite sticks) and a superhero themed cake that my best friend made.

Once the kids arrived they were checked in at a separate desk from the general public, waivers were signed and kids that didn’t already have trampoline socks were given a pair. The party lasts 2.5 hours and 2 hours of that is jump time. We were assigned a wonderful host, Allison, who made sure everything came out at the right time. Water bottles for the kids were provided and we broke for pizza approximately an hour into the jumping. Close to the end we broke for birthday cake. To make it even more special, Allison gathered them altogether at the trampolines to make an announcement that is was their birthday and everyone wished them a HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

And Of Course We Jumped

In between all the party details there was a LOT of jumping. The kids had so much fun. I honestly haven’t seen some of them so sweaty before. We had guests jumping between the age of 2 to 14 years old and every single one of them was happily occupied the entire time. Flying Squirrel also offers a parent jumper add on to the party for only $8 so we had a few moms and dads pulling on the socks to jump with the younger ones.

The toddlers and preschoolers really seemed to enjoy the foam pit and the trampolines that were angled up the wall that they could run up, were the birthday kids and their classmates were happily spreading their time between the rope jump, main jump area, rock climbing wall and the dodge ball area.

Their full list of attractions include: Airbag Pit, Arcade, Battle Beam, Dodgeball Court, Drey Café, Dunk Hoops, Extreme Climbing Wall, Flip Zone, Fly Zone, Freestyle Court, Kiddie Freestyle Court, Kiddie Dunk Hoop, Kiddie Foam Pit, Launch Lanes, Olympic trampolines, Rope Swing, Slackline, Stunt Jump, Tumbling Tracks

While I could go on about what the kids thought our video we made sums it up a lot better and some of the kids even tell you their favourite parts at the end. Watch it here:

I was incredibly satisfied with our choice of birthday party venue this year and my children are asking when we can go back so I’d say it was an all-around success.
